Here is a tidbit during this extreme drought we are in -
Cows love anything green, whether it is hay or leaves on a bush or vine. My neighbor has cows. He has an electric fence. With it so dry, the electric fence does not work. So what happens? a couple of cows leave the pasture by walking or hopping over or walking thru a fence opening and come onto my property, where they start eating leaves off of bushes, my grape vines and also the grass.
To date, I have 5 vines with the leaves eaten off. Until I get the money next week or the week thereafter, I will probably lose some more vines. What can I do? Nothing. I don't own guns, or bows and arrows, so I can't kill the cow. All I can do is try to chase them off my property when I am at home, which is in the mornings and evenings after work.
If this keeps up, then every grape vine that is pushing its head thru the top of the grow tubes will have its leaves eaten off - and that is about 50 vines! Plus I have 3 rows that have no grow tubes on them and are wide open for the cows to get to.
I just hope now that the client that I am doing this house plan for pays me this week, or I might as well not have a vineyard this year. And that would be about $400 down the drain on plants alone.

It seems you should be compensated by the farmer for your losses.
Have you considered stringing some barbed wire fence of your own?
I am hoping to get paid for a job this week and will be putting up an electric fence and on the top I will put a row of barbed wire.
